At age 92 my mother remains one of my most ardent supporters as well as most influential teachers.

While she rarely verbally offers me jewels of wisdom these days, her mere presence is a constant reminder and inspiration to be my best self.

Mom was raised on a farm in Iowa but had the privilege of going to college back when many women never had the opportunity. There she met and fell in love with my father and they had three children.

One of the best lessons and important gifts my mother gave to me was common sense. From an early age, she taught me to use it, trust it, rely upon it. To this day, my common sense approach in many situations continues to serve me well.

Although my mother never set expectations for me, she constantly encouraged me to be and do my best. I don’t ever recall feeling anything other than deep, unconditional love from her. Because of that, I never thought I could fail because I knew, no matter what I did, her love and acceptance would always be present. She taught me to be comfortable with myself and inspired me to be the best I could be.

Most of us will never realize the multitude of lessons we learned from our mothers. At Barry-Wehmiller, we are proud that our people-centric culture and the classes we teach in Barry-Wehmiller University offer our team members lessons they can pass on to their children.
