In a Harris Interactive poll, seventy four percent of Americans report their number one source of stress is work! Other reports show 25% of people hate—not dislike or are unhappy with—but hate their jobs. Survey after survey reveals surprising levels of employee disengagement. Our workforce is struggling. As a leader, can you change this?

The 2012 Towers Watson Global Workforce Study surveyed 32,000 employees across 30 countries. The main factor in driving employee engagement and higher performance, it concluded, is “a work environment that fully energizes employees by promoting their physical, emotional and social well-being.” As a leader, you set the stage for the work environment.

Last week I was honored to give the keynote address at the Institute for Healthcare Consumerism West Forum in Las Vegas, NV. I challenged the audience to break free from the cultural norm of  offering wellness programs to reduce healthcare costs and begin to focus on creating environments of caring that inspire  team members to embrace healthy lifestyles. That’s our vision of well-being throughout Barry-Wehmiller.  As leaders, it is imperative that we create environments that allow our people to thrive.
