Connect Securely and Safely When Using Public Wi-Fi Networks

Here’s what you need to know to connect to the internet via public Wi-Fi networks when working away from your home or BW office.

  • BW’s Virtual Private Network (VPN), Cisco Secure Client:
    • The VPN does not add any extra protection.
    • Use the VPN to access internal BW applications such as an ERP or file servers.
    • Do not connect to the VPN if you are only going to access web-based applications such as websites, Outlook, SharePoint, Teams or Workday.
  • If you have a hotspot-friendly data plan, use the mobile hotspot on your smartphone.
  • For public Wi-Fi networks: Confirm the name of the Wi-Fi network with trustworthy sources, such as the airport, hotel or restaurant staff, to avoid connecting to potentially malicious networks.
  • Don’t automatically join new networks; always manually select the network each time you connect.
  • Avoid accessing, entering and/or processing personal or sensitive data while using public Wi-Fi.

Remember, it's important to always stay vigilant when connecting to public Wi-Fi networks, especially in places like airports, hotels and restaurants, where the network may not be secure. Thank you for your help in keeping our company information and personal data safe.
